アロンゾは、デヴィッド・アビー(David Ab­bey)とナンシー・ファーンハム(Nancy Farn­ham)との間に生まれた。同じく讃美歌の作詞をしたホレイショ・アビー(Horatio Abbey)と兄弟でもある。1848年にマーガレット・ルトレッジ(Mar­ga­ret Rut­ledge)と、1862年にメアリー・エリザベス・トッピング(Mary Eliz­a­beth Top­ping)と結婚した。数年間、音楽教師をした後、音楽出版者となった。
