Bennerdの幼い時に家族がアイオワ州アルビアに、次いでアイオワ州ルーカスに引っ越した。彼は伝道者を志したが、父の死により、母や妹たちを支えなければならなくなった。結婚後、妻と共にイリノイ州の救世軍で働き、後にアメリカとカナダで伝道者として仕えた。Bennardは晩年をミシガン州リードシティで過ごし、商工会議所が彼の家のそばに十字架を立てている。リードシティのThe Old Rugged Cross Historical Museum (丘に立てる荒削りの十字架歴史博物館)に彼の業績が記念されている。
