JamesはLove Levanの夫。

彼はニューヨークのJohn Howard、ムーディ聖書学院のDaniel Townerと共に音楽の道に入る。

1881年頃にペンシルベニア州ウィリアムズポートに移り、1904年から亡くなるまで、パインストリート・メソジスト監督教会の会員として、ソング・リーダー、教会学校教師として仕えた。

Blackは10冊以上のゴスペル歌集を発行し、訳1500曲を書き、1905年のメソジスト讃美歌の刊行にも関わった。
