18歳の時に、心ある人々が彼女をニューヨークのクラバラックの学校に送り、そこで彼女は読み書きを覚え、キリストを信じた。1805年に、ペンキ職人だったTimothy H. Brownと結婚し、コネチカット州のウィンザー、エリントン、マサチューセッツ州マンソン、イリノイ州マーシャルに移り住んだ。
賛美歌のほとんどはマサチューセッツ州マンソンで書かれた。貧困と試練の人生を通過した彼女は、献身的な母親、妻、そしてクリスチャンであった。息子のSamuel R. Brownはアメリカ人初の日本への宣教師となり、二人の孫もその後を継いだ。
