Chisholmは田舎の小さな学校で教育を受け、16歳の時に教師となる。21歳の時に週刊新聞"The Franklin Favorite"紙の副編集長となる。1893年にHenry Clay Morrison博士（後のケンタッキー州ウィルモアのアズベリー・カレッジの校長）のもとでクリスチャンとなる。ChisholmはMorrisonの後を追ってルイビルに移り、"ペンテコスタル・ヘラルド"誌の編集長となる。1903年にはメソジストの牧師として按手を受け、ケンタッキー州スコッツビルで短期間、牧会に携わる。健康上の理由から、彼は家族をインディアナ州ウィノナ・レイクに近い農場に移す。彼自身は保険の外交員となって、1916年にニュージャージー州ヴァインランドに移る。1953年に引退し、オーシャングローブの老人ホームに入る。Chisholmは1200を越える詩を書き、その内800作品が出版され、その多くは曲がつけられた。
