ダウドニーは幼い頃、家族で英国ハンプシャーの田舎に引っ越した。彼女の最初の文学的労作は15歳で書いた詩「The Lessons of the Water-Mill」だった。それはアメリカで人気となった。彼女はおもに「A Woman’s Glory」「Stepping Stones」等の物語や、「Sunday Magazine」「Good Words」等の定期刊行物への貢献を通して、世に知られるようになった。それらの貢献には、小説や、宗教的あるいは世俗的な詩が含まれている。1871年にはホールストン(Houlston)が、彼女の「Psalms of Life」を出版した。
