Van Dykeはプリンストン大学で学び、ニューヨーク市のブリック長老教会の牧師となる。17年後、彼は英文学の教授としてプリンストンに戻った。その後、オランダとルクセンブルグの大使、長老教会の総会議長、レジオンドヌールのコマンドゥール、全米芸術文化協会の会長といった数々の卓越した地位に就いた。1905年には、長老教会の礼拝式文の作成委員長となり、1932年の改訂版の作成に携わった。
