ヘンリー・レイク・ギルモアは10代でアメリカに移住し、画家として働き始めた。南北戦争に参加したが捕虜となり、バージニア州リッチモンドのリビー刑務所で数か月過ごした。戦争後は歯科医となった。1869年にニュージャージー州ウィノナに移り、1885年にウィノナ・メソジスト教会の設立を手伝った。40年間、ピットマン・グローブ・キャンプ・ミーティング（Pitman Grove Camp Meeting）で聖歌隊を指導し、メリーランド州のマウンテン・レイク・パークやペンシルバア州リッジビューパークで、野外伝道集会や信仰復興のための伝道集会で働いた。
