ロバート・グラントの父親のチャールズ・グラントは、スコットランドのインヴァネス議会の議員であり、東インド会社の重役だった。ロバートが6歳の時、家族でインドからイングランドに移った。彼はケンブリッジ大学のマグダレーン・カレッジに通い、1807年に弁護士になった。そして1826年にインヴァネスの議会の議員になった。1832年には枢密顧問官、1932年には法務総監となり、1834年にはナイトに叙せられた。1834年にインドに戻り、ムンバイのボンベイ知事に就任した。彼の作品は「Christian Observer」（1806-15）や「Elliott’s Psalms and Hymns」（1835）に掲載された。また彼の死後、彼の兄弟により「Sacred Poems」（1839）が出版され、1844年と1868年に再版された。
