Grayは22歳の時にキリストを受け入れた。メイン州ルイストンのボストン・カレッジで学び（神学博士）、またアイオワ州デズモン大学で学んだ（法学博士）。1879年にマサチューセッツ州ボストンの第一改革監督教会の牧師となり、そこで14年間牧会した。その後イリノイ州シカゴのムーディー聖書学校で学監（1904-25年）、次いで学長（1925-34年）となり、同校の公用讃美歌である"the Voice of Thanksgiving"の4つの版の編集者となる。
