ヨハン・ヴィルヘルム・ヘイは、牧師であったH. A. ヘイの息子として生まれ、イエナ大学とゲッティンゲン大学で学んだ。1811年、神学を修めた彼は家庭教師としてさまざまな仕事をした後、1818年、ゴータ近郊のテッテルシュタットで牧師となった。1827年、ゴータの宮廷説教者となり、そこで彼の説教は多くの聴衆を魅了した。1832年、イヒタースハウゼンの監督に任命された。ヘイは主に、子ども向けに詩を書いた。
