William James Kirkpatrick(1838-1921)

誕生:1838年2月27日、ペンシルバニア州ダンキャノン。
死亡:1921年9月20日、ペンシルバニア州ジャーマンタウン、ペルハムコート・ホテル。
埋葬地:ペンシルバニア州バラシンウィド、ウェスト・ローレルヒル墓地。

 教師であり音楽家の息子として、Kirkpatrickは音楽の環境の中で育った。1854年、音楽と貿易を学ぶためにペンシルバニア州フィラデルフィアに移り、3年以上を大工として過ごした。しかし、機械よりも音楽に興味を持ち、空き時間をすべて音楽の学びに用いた。当時はバイオリニストになろうと思っていた。

 1855年、Kirkpatrickはフィラデルフィアにあるワートン・ストリート・メソジスト監督教会に加わり、以後、主として宗教音楽に関わるようになり、教会学校や聖歌隊で奉仕する。当時はオルガンのある教会は少なく、彼のバイオリンやチェロは、聖歌隊のリハーサルや歌の集まり、教会の集会に引っ張りだこであった。この時代に彼は数多くの、未発表の賛美歌や頌歌を書いている。

 Kirkpatrickは1861年にSusanna Doakと結婚し、3児をもうけるが、その中には賛美歌作者のMay D. Kirkpatrickがいる。Susannaの死後、彼は1893年にSarah Kellog Bourneと再婚する。1917年にSarahが亡くなった後、John R. Sweneyの未亡人であったLizzie Sweneyと結婚する。

 1861年に南北戦争が始まると、Kirkpatrickは鼓笛隊の長として陸軍に入隊する。翌年には除隊したが、明らかに連邦議会が軍隊付きのバンドの終了を決めたためである。

 KirkpatrickはT. Bishop教授のもとで声楽を学び、それから一流のオラトリオ歌手やバラード歌手に師事する。彼はハルモニアの団員となり、ヘンデル・ハイドン宗教音楽協会のメンバーとなり、そこで当時の著名な歌手の歌や、当時の偉大な合唱曲の作曲者たちと親交を深める。彼の最初に出版された作曲作品は、"When the Spark of Life is Waning"で、1858年頃にニューヨークのミュージカル・パイオニアに登場する。その後次々に50冊の賛美歌集を出版する。その中には以下のものがある。
