ウィリアム・ヘンリー・モンクは1874年、キングス カレッジで歌の教師になった。1876年に国立音楽訓練学校の教師になり、1878年にはベッドフォード・カレッジで教え始めた。そしてロンドンのストーク・ニューイントンにあるセント・マティアス教会で約40年間、音楽監督を務めた。また、6,000万部を売り上げた歴史的な讃美歌集である『古今聖歌集』(Hymns Ancient and Modern)の最初の音楽編集者を務めた。 トーマス・ハーディは『古今聖歌集』のモンクの編集について次のように書いている。
