ジェームズ・モントゴメリは5歳の時、家族でアントリム州バリーメナ近郊のグレースヒルのモラビア人居留地に移った。2年後、ヨークシャーのフルネック神学校に送られた。1787年、ウェイクフィールド近郊のミルフィールドにある店で働くために神学校を中退した。しかしやがてそこでの働きに疲れをおぼえ、ロザラムの近くのワスに移って同様の地位を確保した。ところがそこでの仕事も彼には合わなかった。彼はロンドンへ行き、若書きの詩を出してくれる出版社を探したが失敗に終わった。1792年にはワスを去り、競売人であり書籍販売業者でありシェフィールド・レジスター新聞の印刷業者であったガレス氏の助手となるために、シェリールドへ移った。1794年、ガレスは政治的訴追を避けるために英国を去った。モントゴメリはシェフィールド・レジスター新聞を手に入れ、その名前を「シェフィールド・アイリス」に変更し、32年間編集を続けた。続く2年の間に、モントゴメリは2回投獄された。1回目はバスティーユ崩壊を記念した歌を再版したため、2回目はシェフィールドの暴動を記事にしたためであった。
モントゴメリの活動は、新聞の編集、詩と讃美歌詩の創作と出版、シェフィールドやロンドンの王立研究所における詩についての講演の開催、そして海外宣教と聖書協会の支援など多種多様だったが、それらは彼の人生のほんの一部に過ぎなかった。というのも彼は、時間を見つけては400もの讃美歌詩を書いたのであった。1833年、モントゴメリは王室から年額200ポンドの年金を受け取った。
