誕生：1722年4月11日、英国ケント州シップバーン
死亡：1771年3月21日、キングスベンチ刑務所、英国ロンドン
ペンネーム：メアリー・ミッドナイト(Ma­ry Mid­night)

クリストファー・スマートはケンブリッジのペンブローク・ホールで教育を受け(BA 1747)、シートニアン賞を5年間(4年連続で)受賞した。1753年にロンドンに移って文学に傾注したが、家計と健康をおそろかにしたため、貧しくなり精神に異常をきたして、債務者の刑務所に行き着いた。スマートは2つの人気雑誌の主要な寄稿者であり、象徴的な文化人であったサミュエル・ジョンソンやヘンリー・フィールディングなどの友人でもあった。英国聖公会において、彼はロンドン中に広く知られた存在であった。
