ジョン・ロブソン・スウェニーは、ジョン・H・スウェニーとアン・ホジソンの息子として生まれた。少年時代から公立学校で音楽を教え始め、日曜学校の公演を指揮した。19歳の時、ドイツの著名な教師であるバウアー教授のもとで音楽を本格的に学び始めた。ヴァイオリンとピアノのレッスンを受け、合唱団のリーダーとなった。また、子ども向けのコンサートやグリークラブ(無伴奏男声合唱団)の指揮を務めた。22歳の時、デラウェア州ドーバーで教えるために招かれた。南北戦争が勃発すると、第3デラウェア連隊のバンドを担当した。戦後はペンシルベニア州ウエストチェスターのペンシルベニア陸軍士官学校の音楽教授になった。彼はそこで25年以上働き、音楽学士号(1876年)と音楽博士号(1886年)を取得した。彼は1,000を超える福音唱歌を書き、多くの歌集編集に協力した。彼は生涯に2度、エリザベス A. グールドとリジー E. ヒンクソンと結婚している。
