ダニエル・ブリンク・タウナーは、有名な歌手であり教師でもあった父親や、ジョン・ハワード、ジョージ・ルート、ジェームズ・ウェッブの下で音楽を学んだ。彼はニューヨーク州ビンガムトンのセンテナリー・メソジスト教会(1870–82)、オハイオ州シンシナティのヨーク・ストリート・メソジスト・エピスコパル教会(1882-84)、ケンタッキー州コビントンのユニオン・メソジスト・エピスコパル教会(1884–85)、そしてイリノイ州シカゴのムーディー聖書学院(1893–1919)で、音楽監督を務めた。テネシー州ハリマンにあるアメリカン・テンペランス大学は1900年、タウナーに音楽博士号を授与した。
