テュラーの名は、アメリカ大統領(Ulysses S. Grant)と副大統領(Schuyler Colfax)にちなんで付けられた。彼の父親はアメリカ南北戦争のアンティータムの戦い(Battle of Antietam)で負傷したため、働けなかった。テュラーが2歳のとき母親が亡くなり、家族は離散した。その日から大人になるまで、グラントは安定して住める家を持てなかった。子どもの頃、毛織物工場で、そして靴店員として働いたが、教育も宗教訓練もほとんど受けていなかった。19歳の時、コネチカット州ウォーターベリー近郊でのキャンプ集会でキリストに出会った。それから彼はニュージャージーのハケッツタウン・アカデミー(Hackettstown Academy)で学んだ。メソジストの牧師に任命され、デラウェア州ドーバーで短期間牧会した後、1893年にフルタイムの伝道者となった。そしてアイザック・メレディス(Isaac Meredith)と共に、ニューヨークにテュラー・メレディス音楽出版社(Tullar-Meredith music publishing house)を設立した。
