タートンは、1801年にケンブリッジのクイーンズ・カレッジ(Queens' College)に入学し、1804年にキャサリン・ホール(Catherine Hall, 現在はSt. Catharine's College)に移った。1816年に神学学士の学位を、1828年には神学博士号を獲得した。1813年にノーリッチの助祭に任じられ、6か月後には司祭となった。1830～42年 ピーターバラ主席司祭、1842～45年 ウェストミンスター主席司祭、そして1845年にはエリーの司教を務めた。
