ジョゼフ・フィルブリック・ウェブスターは、ポピュラー音楽を作曲し演奏した。ローウェル・メイソンに師事し、ニューヨーク、ニュージャージー、コネチカットで音楽活動を行い、「ユーターピーンズ」と呼ばれるカルテットを指揮した。1851年、インディアナ州マディソンに移り、続いてイリノイ州シカゴ(1855)、ウィスコンシン州ラシーン(1856年)、そして最後にウィスコンシン州エルクホーン(1857)で活躍した。ウェブスターは1,000を超えるバラードと多くの讃美歌を書いた。彼の最も有名な世俗曲は、1857年の「Lorena」(Henry D. L. Webster作詞) だった。当時、スティーブン・フォスターの「スワニー川」に次ぐ人気だったと言われ、アメリカ南北戦争では両軍で何千人もの兵士によって歌われた。1939年の映画『風と共に去りぬ』では、スカーレット・オハラが喪服を着てチャリティーダンスの屋台を管理している時に、インストルメンタル・バージョンが流れる。ジョン・フォードの2つの映画、「捜索者」(1956年、音楽：マックス・スタイナー) と、「騎兵隊」(1959年、音楽：デイヴィド・バトルフ)にも登場する。
