肉屋の息子として生まれたヘンリー・カーク・ホワイトは、才能ある詩人であった。17歳の時に出版した『クリフトン・グローブ』(Clifton Grove)では、10代の懐疑心を明らかにしている。その後、トーマス・スコットの『真実の力』(Force of Truth)を読んで回心した。そのことについては「ベツレヘムの星」(The Star of Bethlehem)という詩(現在は「夜の平原に軍勢が現れた時」(When Marshaled on the Nightly Plain)として歌われている)で比喩的に語られている。ホワイトは牧師になるため、ケンブリッジのセントジョンズカレッジに入学したが、病気になり卒業前に亡くなった。勉強に集中しすぎて健康を害したともいわれている。 バイロン卿ジョージ・ゴードンは、「イングリッシュ・バード・アンド・スコッチ・レビュアーズ」(English Bards and Scotch Reviewers)でホワイトに対する挽歌を寄せている。
