ウィルソンは学校へ行く前から、姉にバイオリンとオルガンの演奏を教わった。1902年頃、イリノイ州シカゴのムーディ聖書学院(Moody Bible Institute)で勉強を始めた。1905年、ローレンツ出版社(Lorenz Publishing Company)に勤務するため、オハイオ州デイトンへ行った。彼の作品は「The Choir Leader」と「The Choir Herald」に掲載された。彼はまた「The Volunteer Choir」の編集長も務めた。
