1876年12月29日に、Bliss夫妻は、鉄橋の崩落による悲劇的な列車事故に巻き込まれて死亡する。最初は助かるが、炎にまかれた夫人を救出するために現場に戻って亡くなった。アシュタビュラの現場に残された遺骸はアシュタビュラ墓地の合同記念碑のもとに収められた。1877年7月17日にはペンシルバニア州ローマにも記念碑が建立された。 アシュタビュラでの恐ろしい鉄道事故で亡くなる前夜、彼は集まった会衆に、「私は2度とこの道は通らないだろう」と述べ、その後にI'm Going Home Tomorrow(私は明日、天に帰る)を独唱した。まさにそれが彼の預言となった。
